The XIII Central European Forum of Aquileia EuroRegion took place in Udine on 5 October 2017. Organised by the Mitteleuropa Cultural Association, in cooperation with a consortium of public and private stakeholders, the Forum gathered representatives of public institutions, diplomats, politicians and academics from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkan area.
This meeting was part of a process fostering closer economic and political cooperation between the European macroregions (Baltic, Danubian, and Adriatic-Ionian) also in view of facilitating European integration. Since its first edition in 2005, the Forum has represented an important meeting place for institutions and diplomacies of CEI member countries.
This year, Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, opened the Forum, mentioning in his speech: “Europe will have a future only if it will be able to invest in such elements as culture, education and youth mobility, placing the profitability of exchanges among peoples underlying a common project. If this is true, as reported in the title of the event, Europe is shaking, it must also be made clear that every crisis brings with it many opportunities: it is up to us to catch them and prevent the 60-year-old project from collapsing. We need to start from communities, they're a key driver of local development".
The programme included five thematic panels: European security issues; Italy and Friuli Venezia Giulia in the EU; Migrations, integrations and influences; Post Brexit Euro Economy; Perspectives from Central and Eastern Europe. Experts, politicians and academics contributed to focus on these actual topics and facilitated the debate also with the participation of the audience.
The Forum was organised under the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the CEI, which for several years has been cooperating to make this event a laboratory where feasibility and effectiveness are gaining more and more international consideration.
