On 1 February, the Director of the UNESCO Office in Venice, Ana Luiza Thompson-Flores, paid a visit to CEI Secretary General, Amb. Giovanni Caracciolo di Vietri.
The meeting offered the opportunity to discuss the enhancement of cooperation between the two organisations in the framework of specific projects in the areas of Culture and Science. They both agreed that focused joint actions and synergies could be established in view of increasing the impact and effectiveness of the respective activities. In particular, they shared an interest in joining efforts to promote capacity building, know-how exchange, networking, advanced training and technology transfer in the countries of the region.
Thompson-Flores was accompanied by Veronique Dauge, Head of the Culture Unit, and Philippe Pypaert, Head of the Science Unit, who exchanged views with CEI competent staff members, Barbara Fabro and Alessandro Lombardo, on specific areas of common interest as well as on possible instruments and funds to support the project implementation.
During the gathering, special attention was paid to current CEI flagship collaborations, which could offer opportunities for developing joint activities with the UNESCO Venice Office. A representative of the AREA Science Park, Massimiliano Rudella, reported about the recently intensified collaboration with the CEI in the area of know-how exchange and innovation; the president of the Trieste Contemporanea Committee, Giuliana Carbi, briefed on the preparations of the CEI Forum for Contemporary Art Curators taking place in connection with the Venice Biennale.
Among the various projects and activities promoted by the CEI in the cultural and scientific areas, cooperation with the SEE Mosaics Network, the Summer School on Sustainable Blue Growth as well as the EU-funded project “COME-IN” dealing with museums’ accessibility were also mentioned.
After the meeting at the CEI HQ, the UNESCO representatives paid a visit to the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and the Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS), which are long-standing CEI partners.
