High-quality lectures at 4th Straniak Academy on Democracy and Human Rights in Ulcinj, Montenegro

For the fourth time, the Straniak Academy for Democracy and Human Rights in Ulcinj, Montenegro has welcomed students from CEI Member States in the Western Balkan region and other countries.

This year’s event, held on 4-17 September, offered high-quality academic education as well as a platform for networking and interdisciplinary exchange on European values for international experts and students.

The Academy is organised by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights-Research Association in cooperation with the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna as well as the Faculties of Law and Political Science of the University of Montenegro.  It aims at bridging academic and practical knowledge in the fields of democracy, human rights and the rule of law with special focus on the Western Balkan region.

Twenty-nine students participated in the interactive two-week programme, which included lessons given by twenty-three lecturers from different academic and regional backgrounds. The lectures are jointly held by a lecturer from Austria and a lecturer from the Western Balkan region for what is known as “tandem teaching”, in order to enlarge regional and academic perspectives. During the first part of the programme, the students examined concepts and realities of modern democracies in terms of the rule of law and human rights and explored the role of various international organisations. They also deepened their knowledge of selected human rights issues such as media freedom.

This year’s edition dealt with current issues in the region such as the refugee drama and the impact of civic movements and social media within contemporary democratic societies. At the end of the programme the students had the opportunity to collect ECTS points by passing a written exam on their newly gained knowledge.

The fourth edition of the Straniak Academy was co-financed by the CEI Cooperation Fund.
