The main international forum on molecular biology of small DNA tumour viruses, the 46th DNA Tumour Virus Meeting, took place in Trieste on 21-26 July. The event - organised by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and held at the Stazione Marittima - hosted over 300 researchers and the world's top oncologists who provided 120 presentations and 90 posters, illustrating the latest findings in terms of the most efficient tumour therapies and possible prevention techniques.
It is estimated that viruses cause around 12% of all human tumours - the focus of the Meeting was on examining the role recently discovered viruses play in causing various types of cancer. The event also represented an excellent opportunity for students and post-doctorate researchers to exchange views with senior experts from across the World.
The annual event has been taking place since the 1960s, alternating venues between North America and Europe, and, since 2003 - Trieste. The 2015 edition has been co-financed through the CEI Cooperation Fund, supporting the participation of experts from Central and Eastern Europe.
The ICGEB is an international, nonprofit organisation dedicated to advanced research and training in the field of molecular biology and biotechnology. It is based in Trieste and currently counts 60 Member States. It has been part of the CEI Science and Technology Network since its inception in 2004.
