Ministers, Deputy Ministers and High Officials from the Member Countries of the Central European Initiative (CEI) and from the European Commission met in Trieste (Italy) on 24 September 2014. The welcome addresses were delivered by the CEI Secretary General, Ambassador Caracciolo di Vietri, by the Director General of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Science, Research and Economy, Mr. Elmar Pichl, on behalf of the CEI Presidency, and by the President of the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia Region, Debora Serracchiani.

On 11-12 September 2014, RAIL4SEE Project Partners gathered in Zagreb, Croatia for an additional Project Meeting. Following the project extension, partners discussed the results of single pilots related to the hubs of Budapest, Thessaloniki, Bratislava, Zagreb, Vienna, Bologna, Venice, Trieste, Ljubljana, Sofia and Bucharest.

The Seminar was attended on the level of Deputy Foreign Ministers (Belarus, Moldova) and high-level government officials (Austrian CEI Presidency, Ukraine, Poland, Serbia). The EU was represented by its office in Minsk, the CEI Secretariat by the Alternate Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General. Students from the Minsk State University, Faculty of Foreign Relations, participated in the discussion session.

As part of the project Smallholders Farmers’ Access to Markets in Eastern and Northern Bosnia-Herzegovina and Northern Albania, a workshop and a roundtable were organised in the framework of the International Plumb Fair in Gradačac (Northern Bosnia and Herzegovina). The Fair - on 27-30 August this year - is the biggest scientific and economic event related to plumbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The target audience were plumb producers and organisations creating a business environment.

The Presidency of the Central European Initiative is increasingly concerned about the situation in parts of Eastern Ukraine and urges Russia to stop the increased flow of weapons, military personnel and militants across the Russian Ukrainian border as those are blatant violations of international law. While firmly condemning the intensified aggression towards Ukraine, the CEI Presidency requests that Russia immediately cease all forms of support for the separatist groups in Ukraine.

Born in Mostar in 1982, Mirko Božič writes poetry, prose, columns and essays. His poems have been published in literary anthologies and numerous literary magazines in Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad. As emphasised in the laudation by the international jury “Mirko Božić's literary project is a unique reading of the history of his motherland written on the basis of uncommon material tightly related to his family and personal life.

Thirty-four students from 20 countries participated in the 2014 Edition of the EU and Legal Reform Summer School held on 13-18 July in Igalo, Montenegro. Fifteen students came from 7 CEI Member Countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine), whose mobility was co-funded through the CEI Cooperation Fund, contributed by all CEI Members.

The eligibility check of the applications for co-financing through the CEI Cooperation Fund - Call for Proposals 2014 (deadline: 27 May 2014) - has been carried out.

In the context of the Advanced Training Programme for Young Officials from CEI Member Countries on the Management of EU (co) Funded Projects, the CEI is offering up to four fellowships of 1.500,00 EUR per month for a duration of six months.

On 16 - 22 July 2014, farmers from Bratunac, Srebrenica and Milici were trained on which measures to be applied for saving their production, heavily damaged by the recent floods. Meanwhile, 16 representatives from 10 smallholder farmer’s organizations from Posavina area attended a training on 21 July focused on improving their management skills.

The International Master's in Public Procurement Management (PPM) is a full-time advanced postgraduate Master's providing specific training both to public officials already working in procurement as well as to young students wishing to pursue a career in this field.

The partnership of the project “ADRIA A - Accessibility and development for the re-launch of the inner Adriatic area” gathered on 11 July 2014 in Trieste, on the premises of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, to discuss the state-of-the-art of the project, setting concrete steps targeted to fulfil its objectives. The meeting took place at a crucial moment for the development of the project, entering its final stage.

The RAIL4SEE project partners, gathering in Budapest on 14-16 July 2014, had the opportunity to participate in an on-site visit at the Budapest intermodal station, with a presentation on its developments and improvements over the years, as well as in a ride with the Children’s railway to the terminal. Comprehensive information about the intermodal public transport in Budapest and its connection with other Hungarian and European cities was also provided.

Participants from 11 CEI countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Ukraine) as well as from Greece and Turkey areattending the Summer School on "Sustainable Blue Growth in South East Europe" in Grignano, Trieste, on 14-18 July 2014. The majority of participants were scientists and doctoral candidates in marine sciences and related sectors.

The ADRIA A project has received a strong endorsement from the regional and national government through the General Framework Agreement in the field of transport signed by the two parties. The Agreement explicitly quotes ADRIA A as a best practice of cross-border cooperation with neighbouring countries and builds on its findings and feasibility studies to officially support the financing of the missing infrastructural links identified by the project.

Around 30 participants, including young social scientists from 16 countries of Central and Eastern Europe, are taking part in the 11th DRC Summer School on Regional Co-operation, in Novi Sad, Serbia 6-13 July. This year, the Summer School is dedicated to the 100th anniversary since the start of the World War I, with special focus on “chances and challenges for the Danube region”.
