"IMAGINE" Call for Ideas: winning school in Romania visits UN Office in Geneva

The "Aurel Vlaicu" Theoretical High School in Romania, 2nd place winner of the 2022 edition of Call for Ideas and Award Competition “ IMAGINE!” Active Young Citizens for Sustainable Development in CEI and AII Areas for their project “Become the best version of yourself, be non-formal!”[1] has used its award of €20.000 to visit the United Nations headquarters in Geneva in April this year.

The visit proved to be an eye-opening experience for 14 students and 7 enthusiastic teachers, shedding light on the critical role of the United Nations in promoting peace and human rights worldwide. Participants gained a newfound appreciation for this unique institution that serves as a platform for global dialogue and problem-solving, irrespective of the challenges faced.

Undoubtedly, the trip to Geneva presented an extraordinary opportunity for students and teachers alike to uncover the city's beauty, cultural richness, and embrace its western lifestyle. From visiting significant tourist attractions and historical monuments to partaking in unforgettable gastronomic adventures, the journey proved to be an educational and rewarding experience for all involved.

As they returned home, they carried with them a renewed perspective on the importance of global collaboration in fostering peace and advocating for human rights.

The main objective of the competition was to raise awareness of CEI and Adriatic Ionian Initiative countries’ high school students on the UN Agenda 2030 (UNA2030) and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a learning process and the participation in this Call, encouraging them to reflect on the contribution they could provide to its implementation at local level.

With this activity, the CEI has strengthened its commitment to the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda and helped foster activities in favour of youth.
