On 17 May, the CEI Executive Secretariat (CEI-ES) attended the ADRIASPILLCON 2023 in Opatija, Croatia together with high-level speakers and stakeholders from the Adriatic coastal States, the Mediterranean region, the European countries, and other parts of the world.
The event witnessed an exchange of views and knowledge - among national, regional, and international institutions - on topics related to oil spill preparedness and response (on the sea and inland), and to spills due to other hazardous and noxious substances. It especially aimed at presenting the latest developments in the technical, scientific, legal, and organisational fields regarding accidental marine pollution.
To this end, the CEI-ES provided the audience with an overview of the project NAMIRS (North Adriatic Maritime Incident Response System) and its relevance for establishing a mechanism for transnational response in case of spill-over of pollutants in the North Adriatic Sea. On that same day, the National Institute for Oceanography and Applied Geophysics, a NAMIRS partner, presented the progress of the analysis and risk-assessment, showing how its results could help responders plan their interventions in case of accidental pollution.
On the margins of ADRIASPILLCON 2023, other parallel events were organised by the Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC). Among these, the CEI-ES attended one supporting synergies between and among Sub-Regional Marine Pollution Contingency Plans in the Mediterranean. In this framework, it had the chance to exchange views and learn more about the coordination mechanism set up until now within the Barcelona convention framework.
