With his project “Surface Friendly Carrier System”, Oleg Vereshchagin from Ukraine is the winner of the CEI Award at the 14th International Design Contest “Trieste Contemporanea”.
This year’s edition - called BASIC - invited applicants to propose an original and innovative object of contemporary design taking into account the sustainable development goals, and with a focus on the new meanings and purposes objects and tools could have when addressing sustainable goals or facing emergencies (e.g. the unprecedented outbreak).
Vereshchagin’s project suggests a modular solution to create a multi-purpose carrier system, making use of recyclable material such as polycarbonate, nylon, rubber and some types of e-waste. These modular systems have a long life, are repairable and, after they expire, they keep the plastic from penetrating into nature.
Open to designers from CEI Member States and other European countries, the competition is held every two years and organised by the Trieste Contemporanea Committee, with the support of the CEI, the BEBA Foundation (Venice), L’Officina and Studio Tommaseo (Trieste), the Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, and the partners of the international network “Continental Breakfast”.

The competition consisted of several prizes including the CEI Award (see press release). The awarding ceremony took place on 13 July 2022 in the form of an online meeting. Members of the jury, including CEI Senior Executive Officer Barbara Fabro, and the following winning designers were present: BEBA AWARD Yuliia Polozova (Ukraine/Poland), CEI AWARD Oleg Vereshchagin (Ukraine) and GILLO DORFLES AWARD Renata Dezso (Hungary).
During the awarding ceremony, the online catalogue, including the projects by Special Mention Katharina Halusa (Austria) and several selected designers, was presented.
