The Southeast Europe Mosaics conference held in Pula, Croatia, on 3-6 October 2017 was organised by the Croatian Conservation Institute in cooperation with the Archaeological Museum of Istria, Pula County Chamber and the Central Institute for Conservation in Belgrade. The event was held in the framework of the SEE Mosaics Project, a regional project aimed at raising awareness about the need for a more organised protection of mosaics in Southeast Europe and at bringing together experts to advance approaches to mosaic conservation in the region.
More than 40 experts from Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, and the USA attended the event. During the three-day conference, 21 lectures and 5 posters were presented on three main topics: current challenges of detached mosaics on movable supports, past and present solutions for detached mosaics and conservation techniques for mosaics.
Issues covered by the presentations and discussions included the importance of a contextual approach to mosaics as integral parts of architecture or its surroundings, the justification for detachment of mosaics, detaching methods and techniques, storage of detached mosaics and contemporary approaches to mosaic mounting. The speakers presented case studies regarding their experience and fields of work.
The conference was concluded with a roundtable discussion, identifying the following issues:
The programme also included the visits to relevant archaeological sites in Pula and the Eurasian Basilica in Poreč.
This event was co-funded by the CEI Cooperation Fund.
