The Central European Initiative speaks at FAO’s “Scientific Workshop on Mountain Mobility and Transport”

The Central European Initiative participated in the sixth edition of the Scientific Workshop on Mountain Mobility and Transport (SWOMM) dedicated to Transport & Environment in Mountain Areas on 14 December 2010 at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Since 2005,  SWOMM has been a significant international gathering where experiences and knowledge are shared and issues discussed in relation to sustainable mobility and transport in mountain areas. Special attention was paid to the Alpine region and mountain areas worldwide.   On this occasion, during the panel on  “Policy Measures for Optimization in Mountain Areas”, the CEI presented the SUGAR Project (Sustainable Urban Goods Logistics Achieved by Regional and Local Policies – www.sugarlogistics.eu)  as an experience of environmentally sustainable good practices for the distribution of goods in urban centres, with specific reference to mountain centres.   The CEI also participated in the round table on“Transport Policies and Environmental Quality”, on how to strike the balance between cost minimization and benefit creation. In this panel, the experience of the ADRIA A Project was presented (co-financed by the Cross Border Cooperation Programme Italy-Slovenia). How ADRIA A would take into account the peculiarity of the Karst ecosystem in the elaboration of the transport system and how this would contribute to creating environmental benefits was also highlighted.   The event was attended by over 60 participants from research bodies and relevant institutions including the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, the Mountain Partnership (FAO), the Veneto Region as well as other experts and European authorities.   For more information: www.swomm.info
