Promoting judicial cross-border cooperation in combating crime

In the framework of the CEI’s cooperation with the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region in Italy, as well as with its line of work dedicated to judicial cooperation, on 30 March, the Executive Secretariat hosted the "Round-table on the Framework Decision 2009/829/JHA on enforcement, among the Member States of the European Union, of the principle of mutual recognition of decisions on alternative measures to pre-trial detention". The gathering  - as part of the training activities in the European project "Pre and Post" - was organised by the Prosecutor Office of Trieste. It witnessed the participation of public Prosecutors of Austria, Croatia, Italy and Slovenia.

International judicial and police cooperation are crucial, especially in cross-border areas where it is often hard to identify the geographical  limits of a crime.  "Reinforcing mutual knowledge, speaking a common language and establishing a regular, almost daily, dialogue between prosecutors on the different sides of a border is necessary to combating crime", said Mr. De Nicolo - Public Prosecutor of Trieste.

In this context, Secretary General Roberto Antonione stated that cross-border and transnational cooperation were very much in line with the CEI mission. He, therefore, also confirmed that the CEI Secretariat was fully available for facilitating such collaboration and for hosting other meetings in the future.
