Working together towards building disaster-resilient societies as a fundamental prerequisite for achieving sustainable development.
This is the main goal of the ResiliENHANCE Platform - jointly promoted by the CEI-ES, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the UNESCO Chair on Intersectoral Safety for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience of the University of Udine - which was launched during an international workshop in Udine (Italy) on 24-25 October.
This new knowledge-sharing and knowledge-bridging tool - created to specifically support the achievement of the 2030 Global Agenda, and actively counter the effects of multi-faceted problems caused by the current widespread health, socio-economic and environmental challenges (i.e. climate change, the Covid-19 pandemic etc.) - will be achieved through a series of activities aimed at linking diverse perspectives, expertise, and knowledge of different disciplines contributing to resilience; it will be carried out through an interdisciplinary network among experts from scientific institutions from CEI Member States, such as the UNESCO Chairs, UN agencies in particular UNESCO, EU institutions and local, regional and national institutions, by promoting a holistic approach to increase the resilience to disasters, and taking into account a complex and interconnected world, where unpredictability is the "new normal".
CEI Deputy Secretary General Nina Kodelja - while thanking the project partners for their long-standing cooperation - underlined the important role the CEI played as a convener of multiple actors jointly fostering regional cooperation, with sustainable development at the core of its mission; she emphasised how partnerships both at local / regional level as well as with UN Agencies were ever more crucial, especially with regard to the pursuit of the priorities set within its Local Dimension and of the UN Agenda 2030 and the implementation of the SDGs respectively.
The following short- and long-term results are envisaged to be reached through the Platform:
- elaboration of recommendations for strengthening territorial resilience and safety in the various phases of the disaster management cycle through a whole-of-society approach;
- creation of the above-mentioned interdisciplinary network between experts;
- increase of synergies between scientists and policy- and decision-makers, to enhance resilience and safety to support sustainable development.
