EU Project ICARUS: kick-off meeting in Venice

On 27-28 March 2019, the CEI-Executive Secretariat participated as Project Partner in the official kick-off meeting of the EU Project ICARUS (Intermodal Connections in Adriatic-Ionian Region to Upgrowth Seamless solutions for passenger) held in Venice.

10 project partners from Italy and Croatia gathered to launch this 30-month project to improve passenger intermodal transport connections and east coast hinterland sustainable accessibility to promote car-independent lifestyles. ICARUS is funded under the Interreg V-A Italy-Croatia CBC Programme and promotes a strategy for intermodal connections in Adriatic Ionian Region. 

During their gathering, participants started analysing the current state-of-the-art with the aim of identifying gaps and needs of the territories and involving authorities and transport operators in testing new or extended services to improve multimodal connections in the area.

The project aims at activating behavioural change in mobility by using the Mobility as a Service, a concept which moves passenger needs from the transport means to the mobility service. More specifically, 8 pilot projects and a case study will be implemented focusing on timetable harmonisation, car/bike sharing within transport nodes, ICT solutions for seamless flow of information, integrated intelligent multimodal payment systems, dynamic travel planning and cross-border intermodal services. 

These activities will be tested in the regions of Emilia-Romagna, Abruzzo, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Primorsko-Goranska, Istarska, Sibensko-Kninska and Splitsko-Dalmatinska.


The CEI-Executive Secretariat is responsible for the Communication Strategy of the project, which is particularly relevant for raising the awareness of local stakeholders and beneficiaries and for highlighting the importance of EU funding of this kind of action, that aims improving European citizens' living conditions and the environmental sustainability of their leisure time. The Secretariat is committed to the dissemination of ICARUS achievements in the relevant sector workshops of the European macro-regional strategies for the Adriatic –Ionian, the Danube and the Alpine regions.
