EU-funded project NAMIRG, a cross-border model for safety in Northern Adriatic Sea

The launching press conference of the NAMIRG project took place on 9 March at the CEI headquarters in Trieste. The event was attended by media representatives as well as by local authorities and project partners.

NAMIRG - North Adriatic Maritime Incident Response Group, co-funded by the European Commission - DG ECHO, aims at creating a joint response mechanism (the MIRG of the Northern Adriatic) in case of fire in the Northern Adriatic Sea, through the formation of a cross-border team of firefighters, and the implementation of an effective system of coordinating the emergencies by the three countries bordering the northern Adriatic basin (Croatia, Italy and Slovenia).

The CEI Executive Secretariat is coordinating this 24-month project which is promoted by the Regional Directorate of Fire Brigade of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, with the support of the Ministry of the Internal Affairs, in collaboration with the fire brigades of Koper/ Capodistria and the Istria region.

As specified by the CEI Secretariat, NAMIRG represents a first pilot action that will constitute a tangible response mechanism able to involve three of the 18 CEI Member States and has started in the year in which the CEI Presidency is held by Croatia. The objective is to be able to extend this initiative also to other countries of the Adriatic and the CEI area, such as Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro.

During the press conference, the actions and the objectives of the project were presented by CEI Project Manager, Anna Marconato,  and the Regional Director of the Fire Brigade of the FVG region, Loris Munaro. Technical contributions were also provided by the chiefs of the Croatian and Slovenian fire brigades, partners of the project.
