Within the framework of the EU-funded project “Accessibility improved at border crossings for the integration of South East Europe” (ACROSSEE) the first seminar with the European Commission was held on 18 June in Brussels at the premises of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region office.
About 40 participants representing the European Commission – DG MOVE, Ministries of Transport of Albania, Austria, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia, the Committee of the Regions, Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Veneto Region, Smolyan Region, the European Intermodal Association, and other project partners gathered to discuss ACROSSEE’s contribution to macro-regional strategies, considering both the Danube and the newly developed Adriatic-Ionian macro-region. This topic was tackled in the context of the new programming period, taking into account the creation of synergies between the two initiatives in order to identify the multiplier effects of the already existing macro-regional strategies in this very crucial moment of setting major priorities.
The seminar gave participants the opportunity to liaise with the European Commission: Mr. Helmut Adelsberger (DG MOVE) provided a presentation of the European framework (TEN T) and the definition of its priority projects, while Mr. Gianluca Spinaci, from the Committee of the Regions, focused on the potential gaps between the macro regional strategies which could be overcome by transport initiatives, such as ACROSSEE.
The project, officially launched on 1October 2012, is financed under the South-East Europe Transnational Cooperation Programme and is promoted by the CEI as Lead Partner, in cooperation with 24 partner institutions (Ministries of Transport, Regional Administration, National Transport Operators and European Associations, Universities and Research Institutions) from 13 countries from the region. The main aim of the project is to improve cross-border accessibility in the SEE area and strengthen coordination among SEE national administrations in the light of EU legislation.
The institutional platform of the ACROSSEE project will be further developed during the Ministerial conference to be organised in Trieste on 11-12 November 2013. During the event, entitled “Institutional coordination for overcoming the crisis: investments and horizontal measures to increase development of the SEE region”, Ministers of transport and infrastructure, managing authorities at national, regional and local level, European decision-makers, stakeholders and transport providers will exchange views, set common objectives and priorities for the future development, optimisation and extension of the European transport networks.
