On 1 August 2019, Trieste Trasporti and Slovenske Železnice (Slovenian railways) signed the amendment of the agreement for the extension of a new cross-border integrated public transport service (bus/train) between Trieste and Ljubljana, at the CEI headquarters. On 30 August the regional council agreed on this extension and adopted a specific act proposed by the Regional Minister for Infrastructure and Territory, Graziano Pizzimenti.
Therefore, the cross-border Trieste-Ljubljana integrated connection activated from 1 March 2019 until 31 August, will be prolonged, until 31 December 2019. The experimental service (a pilot action coordinated by CEI-ES) enables users to travel by bus from the centre of Trieste to the railway station of Villa Opicina and then to the centre of Ljubljana with the trains operated by Slovenian railways. The integrated ticket (8 EUR) is available for online purchase on the Slovenian railways website.
The extension of this cross-border service represents a successful example of the institutional dialogue between the public transport operators of the two countries, as well as with the regional authority of Friuli Venezia Giulia, which opens opportunities for improving the public transport connections at both the local and cross-border level. Together with Mr. Diego Regazzo, director of Trieste Trasporti, and Ms. Darja Kocjan, director of Slovenian Railways, representatives had the chance to assess the progress of the integrated connection and discuss possibilities for further advancements.
The service is realised in the framework of the EU-funded project CONNECT2CE, coordinated by the CEI as lead partner. CONNECT2CE aims at improving public transport accessibility in rural, peripheral and cross-border areas of Central Europe with a focus on three main topics: improvement of cross-border connectivity; promotion of integrated ticketing and tariff schemes; and implementation of innovative ICT tools.
