Serbian Designer Milan Rankovic wins CEI Prize at International Design Contest “Trieste Contemporanea”

Promoted by the Trieste Contemporanea Committee, the International Design Contest aims at displaying the most original expressions of design from the CEI countries as well as from the Baltic countries, Germany and Turkey.

This year the candidates were required to conceive an original and innovative item of contemporary design answering the question “Which object would you imagine to find in / bring to / take from a harbour for cultures?”. In fact, the contest was held in the framework of the ongoing project HARBOUR FOR CULTURES which draws inspiration from the real case history of how to convert and reuse the area of the Porto Vecchio (old port) of Trieste.

The CEI Prize (3.000 EUR) was assigned to the Serbian Designer Milan Ranković who submitted the project "S-case", a portable solar suitcase that uses solar panels to produce electric energy and which can also be used for cooking.

Julia Landsiedl from Austria received the GILLO DORFLES Award with the project "Buoy" while Meriç Arslanoğlu from Turkey received the TRIESTE Award and the BEBA Award with the project CON-TAG# which transforms the Porto Vecchio in a virtual and floating square shaped like a balloon.

Two Special Mentions were also assigned: one to the Croatian designer Ines Vlahović for the project "Sal_ary", the other one to the Turkish group composed of Cansu Dinç, Beyzanur Meriç, Sunay Paşaoğlu, Ebranur Yýlmaz for the project "threshang”.

The Jury was composed of Emanuela Marassi, Trieste Contemporanea; Daniele Capra, curator, Venezia; Laura Carlini Fanfogna, director of Museums and Libraries, City Hall, Trieste; Barbara Fabro, Central European Initiative; Barbara Holub, artist and architect, transparadiso, Vienna; Giulio Polita, architect, Trieste.

The awarding ceremony took place in Trieste on 8 September on the occasion of the opening of the projects’ exhibition.
