The Ukrainian poet, writer and essayist Andriy Lyubka was born in Riga in 1987. He completed his degrees in Ukrainian Philology at the Uzhhorod University (2009) and in Balkan Studies at the University of Warsaw (2014). He is the author of three books of poetry – Eight Months of Schizophrenia (2007), TERRORISM (2008), and Forty Bucks Plus Tip (2009) – and five books of prose – KILLER: A Collection of stories (2012), Sleeping with Women (2014), Carbide(2015), A Room for Sorrow (2016) and Saudade (2017).
In its motivation, the selection committee emphasised that Andriy Lyubka is among the top young poets and writers of Ukrainian literature and he is a most promising European creator. He has shown a great sensitivity for the peripheral landscapes of European culture, from Ovid’s times forth. These may be the twilight regions of our consciousness, yet they are startlingly creative. They reflect the ambitions of artists to promote values that are vital to “Europeanism”. Lyubka’s book plan has Ovid as a metaphorical link between Western and Eastern Europe, which represents a creative challenge for him.
Lyubka’s writings have been translated into Polish, Chinese, English, Portuguese, Russian, Czech, Serbian, Macedonian, Slovak, Lithuanian, Romanian, Turkish and German. He also works as a translator, having published several translations from Polish, Serbian and English into Ukrainian. He is a columnist for Radio Liberty, Den and Zbruch. He was a curator for the literary festivals Kyivski Lavry and Meridian Czernowitz and writer-in-residence at cultural institutes in Poland, Latvia, Romania, Hungary, Sweden and Austria.
The CEI has been presenting the CEI Fellowship for Writers in Residence in collaboration with the Slovene Writers’ Association, as part of the Vilenica International Literary Festival, since 2006. The Fellowship seeks to encourage cross-border cooperation and promotion in the field of literature for young writers from non-EU CEI Member States. The Fellowship award of 5,000 EUR, is meant to be used for a three-month residency in any CEI Member State of the candidate’s choice. During this period the author is expected to work on the project indicated in his/her application form.
For his project, Lyubka has selected Vilenica (Slovenia) as the place of his residence.
Deputy Secretary General Erik Csernovitz presented the CEI Fellowship for Writers in Residence 2017 in Sežana, at the Kosovel Cultural Centre on 8 September.
On that same day, the CEI Literary Roundtable, which is supported through its Cooperation Fund, was held in Lipica under the title ' “Literature That Changes the World That Changes Literature”.
On 5 September, the Vilenica pre-opening event took place in Trieste, at the CEI HQ, with the participation of poets Antonella Bukovaz (Italy) and Maja Vidmar (Slovenia).
