KEP ITALY’s “ALERT: Strengthening Serbian multi-hazard early warning and alert system. PHASE II”. Project launch

The system for monitoring, weather forecasting and early warning of the Emilia-Romagna region has become an example to follow for Serbia. The project ALERT: Strengthening Serbian multi-hazard early warning and alert system. PHASE II launched its activities in Belgrade in March this year.

The participants at the kick-off meeting were the director of Hydro-Meteo-Climate Service of ARPAE, Carlo Cacciamani, Andreja Mladenovic, vice-mayor of the city of Belgrade and Milan Bojovic, the vice-mayor of the city of Cacak.

The meeting also witnessed the presence of the industry representatives from the department dedicated to managing emergencies of the Serbian Interior Ministry and representatives of the Directorate for Water Management as well as various institutions involved in the financing of the Serbian Strategy for natural disaster risk reduction.

The project aims at optimising the warning system for hydrological risks of Serbia, which in recent years has been affected by dramatic floods. The project is expected to introduce in Serbia a multi-risk alert system to strengthen inner-communication links and data exchange among all involved institutions in order to guarantee disaster prevention, risk reduction and safety of population. Thanks to the project, local authorities in charge of disaster prevention and safety of populations will effectively monitor, predict, prevent and timely intervene against different types of risk, such as the ones connected to extreme natural events or man-produced disasters.

The project is implemented in the framework of the Know-how Exchange Programme (KEP), financed by the CEI Fund at the EBRD entirely supported by the Italian Government, with a grant of 40,000 EUR and a total project cost of more than 80,000 EUR.
