Learning more about opportunities offered by the European funds dedicated to culture through enhanced collaboration among organisations, foundations and festivals from 17 European countries, with special focus on the "New Europe" and the CEI Member States, was the main topic of the International Symposium "Opera Houses and Music Festivals in Central and Eastern Europe" held in Trieste on 21 June 2014.
The event - organised by the CEI in collaboration with the Giuseppe Verdi Theatre in Trieste, on the occasion of the World Music Day - witnessed the participation of representatives of organisations and foundations of theaters and music festivals from Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey. The Theater an der Wien in Vienna, the national theaters of Timisoara and Bratislava, the International Festival "Sarajevo Winter", the Macedonian Opera, the International Festival of Izmir, the Mittlefest were amongst the participants. The Artistic Director of the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts from Brussels and the President of France Festivals were also present.
The event was opened by the the CEI Secretary General, Giovanni Caracciolo di Vietri and by the Mayor of Trieste, Roberto Cosolini. The relevance of the themes and objectives of the event also caught the attention of the Italian Ministry of Culture:
“On the eve of the Italian Presidency of the European Union, I wish to express my appreciation for the attention this conference devotes to the access opportunities to European funds. Culture is one of the engines of growth, development and employment; the use of the opportunities offered by Europe should therefore be encouraged and strengthened, especially taking into account the special attention paid by Italy to Central Europe, the South West Balkans and to the Eastern Partnership, as part of its foreign policy initiatives”, stated Minister for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, Dario Franceschini in a goodwill message delivered to all participants.
Also on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Culture, Cristina Loglio, Chair of the Working Table “Creative Europe”, presented the opportunities and priorities of this EU Programme. Emilio Dalmonte, Deputy Head of the European Commission Representation in Italy, also addressed the public.
On behalf of the Italian Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the Regional Councilor for Culture, Gianni Torrenti, and the Consultant for European Policies and International Relations, Marco Marinuzzi, actively participated in the meeting.
"We want to involve more and more young audiences, train young musicians in our member countries, promote the use of new technologies, follow the new trends in opera, ballet and symphonic music in Central and Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans, with whom we share a common and well-recognised cultural heritage", said the CEI Secretary General, Caracciolo di Vietri, while stressing that the CEI had already a solid experience in the field of culture and - besides music which was the main topic of the Symposium - in the sectors of media, design, visual arts, literature and filmmaking in particular.
