New EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR) adopted – CEI a natural partner

On 17 June 2014 the European Commission adopted the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR).

Building upon the favourable experience gained from the two macro-regional strategies (EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, EU Strategy for the Danube Region), the European Council had requested the European Commission to present a new EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region before the end of 2014.

7 out of 8 countries participating in the EUSAIR are also CEI Member Countries: three EU Member States (Croatia, Italy, Slovenia) and four non-EU countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia).

Fostering, "regional cooperation for EU integration and bridge between macro-regions", is one of CEI’s main roles within its mission. Therefore, the CEI is a natural partner in the EUSAIR Strategy, which represents an important step towards further advancing EU integration and the overall socio-economic development of the Western Balkans.

The CEI will contribute to this process also thanks to its longstanding experience as the oldest and largest forum of regional cooperation in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe, to its well-established know-how and management skills of large scale projects in the field of regional cross-border cooperation.

The new Strategy incorporates the Maritime Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, adopted by the Commission on 30 November 2012.
