CEI KEP ITALY: SUSAGRI project – progress in developing guidelines for implementation of sustainable agriculture

The SUSAGRI project is designed and implemented by the Council for Agricultural Research and Economics (CREA, Italy), the Research Institute for Horticulture in Skierniewice (RIH, Poland) and the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Sarajevo (SUFASA), in collaboration with the Administration of Bosnia and Herzegovina for Plant Health Protection (PHPA), a central authority within the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations.

The project partners met for the first time in Sarajevo in April, where the beneficiaries stressed the importance to elaborate guidelines - considering all kinds of crops and species - for the implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The focus was especially on spruce seedlings, plums, cucumbers and corn. The drafts for two of them (plums and cucumbers) have already been completed and shared among participants.

A study visit at the Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice, Poland is envisaged for the BiH partners in September. The programme includes a visit to both vegetable and fruit producers as well as to the producers’ associations. The BiH partners will also visit the Regional and National Agricultural Advisory Centers (important stakeholders for the implementation of IPM), as well as the Main Inspectorate for Plant Protection and Seeds Inspection (in charge for the implementation of controls in IPM).

On 15 - 18 October the VI International Scientific Agriculture Symposium "Agrosym 2015” will be organised in Jahorina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. On that occasion SUSAGRI will be presented under the title “Italian and Polish experience to support the development of integrated pest management in Bosnia & Herzegovina”.

The overall goal of the project is to contribute to the development of guidelines for sustainable and integrated agricultural growth according to the European Directive 2009/128, by encouraging low-input of pesticides and alternative practices for the management of soil fertility, control of pathogens and pests of horticultural crops. ***
The project is co-financed with a grant within the CEI Know How Exchange Programme (KEP ITALY) in the framework of the CEI Fund at the EBRD, fully contributed by Italy. The CEI grant amounts to €30,800 EUR out of the total project cost of 80,000 EUR. The 18-month project will be running until June 2016.
