CEI-JRC European Workshop on Advanced Biofuels, Biorefinery and Bioeconomy held in Bratislava

More than 90 experts from research and technology institutions, governments, NGOs, SMEs and industrial enterprises from 16 European countries participated in the CEI-JRC European Workshop on Advanced Biofuels, Biorefinery and Bioeconomy (ABBE): A Challenge for Central and East European Countries, held in Bratislava, Slovakia on 25-27 March. The event was also attended by representatives of the European Commission, the CEI, the EC - Joint Research Centre (JRC), as well as of the United Nations - Economic Commission for Europe and Organization for Security and Co-operation.
 
The workshop, chaired by Prof. Stanislav Miertuš (University of SS. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, and ICARST, Bratislava, Slovak Republic), included various expert presentations and discussions on current trends in research, innovation, technologies and industrial production of new generation biofuels - advanced biofuels together with the concepts of biorefineries and bioeconomy. Prospects and sustainability assessment were reviewed as well.

Giorgio Rosso Cicogna, Special Advisor to CEI Secretary General, delivered a welcome speech emphasising relevant CEI initiatives in the field. In particular, he introduced the CEI - PRAISE Programme, aimed at promoting science, technology transfer and innovation in all CEI countries, and invited the workshop participating institutions to become partners of this initiative.
 
The gathering gave multisectoral stakeholders the chance to share knowledge and experience and formulate recommendations for national and regional ways forward towards increasing competitiveness, environmental and social sustainability of the advanced biofuel value chains as well as for strengthening regional integration.
 
The workshop was organised by the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of SS. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, Slovakia, in cooperation with ICARST, Bratislava and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic. The participation of invited speakers from CEI countries was co-financed by the CEI Cooperation Fund and the JRC.
