CEI KEP ITALY: Kick off meeting for PACKSENSOR project: technology applied to food safety in Serbia

The implementation of the Project PACKSENSOR, dedicated to sustainable food packaging and monitoring in South Serbia, officially started with a kick-off meeting in Leskovac on 14-15 January 2015.

The project, fully titled PACKSENSOR - The impact of the controlled atmosphere on quality and safety of the close-seal-packaged food applied in the SMEs of South Serbia, aims to provide solutions for monitoring the influence of packaging on food safety, currently not practiced by local firms due to the lack of trained personnel and proper equipment.

During the meeting, the representatives of the Faculty of Technology in Leskovac, University of Nis, Serbia, as project beneficiary and the only research institution in the region dealing with food technology, illustrated their needs to the representatives of the Know-How providing institution - the Institute of Photonics and Nanotechnologies of the Italian National Research Council (CNR-IFN).

A visit to local markets was organised in order to introduce the know-how provider to the main packaging solutions currently used by the local SMEs. The Italian Research Council illustrated their activities and available solutions in the field of gas content measurement in food packages.

In particular, the project aims to develop a contactless laser gas sensor able to leave gas mixtures in packages unchanged, thus maintaining the quality and extending the products’ shelf-life. The beneficiary institution will use the device for a variety of activities as it can operate on surfaces such as food trays, bags and bottles.

The PACKSENSOR project is co-financed with a grant within the CEI Know How Exchange Programme (KEP ITALY) in the framework of the CEI Fund at the EBRD, fully contributed by Italy. The CEI grant amounts to 37,000 EUR out of the total project cost of 80,000 EUR. The 20-month project will be running until August 2016.
