The UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution on “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Central European Initiative” on 11 November 2014, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the CEI. The document aims at strengthening cooperation between the UN system with the CEI, the latter enjoying observer status in the UN General Assembly since 2011.
While appraising continuous contribution of the CEI to the political advancement in the region, the Resolution, endorsed by all 18 CEI Member States, invites the UN Secretary General to strengthen dialogue with the Initiative, and recommends that all relevant agencies, organisations and programmes of the UN system continue cooperation and joint activities with the CEI. Also Liechtenstein joined in the endorsement of the Resolution.
“The UN Resolution represents a further step in recognising the consistent efforts of the CEI in assisting the political and socio-economic advancement of the region by offering a platform for dialogue and project support”, said CEI Secretary General, Giovanni Caracciolo di Vietri. “This important document appraises the CEI for supporting and implementing joint regional projects in strategic areas through the CEI Fund at the EBRD, financed entirely by Italy, and the CEI Cooperation Fund, to which all Member States contribute. Projects related to capacity-building and the sharing of good practices through the Know-how Exchange Programme, financed by Italy and Austria, and the CEI role in the implementation of EU-funded projects were also mentioned”.
Youth activities, transport and infrastructure, renewable energy were recent areas of cooperation in the UN context.
The 25th anniversary of the CEI will be officially celebrated in Vienna on the occasion of the CEI Summit on 24 November under the Austrian CEI Chairmanship.
