The majority of participants were scientists and doctoral candidates in marine sciences and related sectors.
The Summer School is organised by the Italian National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) in cooperation with the Robert Bosch Foundation, the Friuli Venezia Region, and the Universities of Trieste and Udine.
During the opening ceremony, CEI Deputy Secretary General, Erik Csernovitz, welcomed the participants and underlined the longstanding collaboration between the CEI and the OGS which is one of the seven Trieste-based research centres forming the CEI Science & Technology Network (S&TN), launched in 2004.
During her welcome address, OGS President, Maria Cristina Pedicchio, thanked the CEI Secretariat for the valuable assistance offered in promoting the Summer School among possible applicants from CEI Member States. Pedicchio underlined that over 400 individuals applied for the 40 fellowships.
“Adequate training for researchers, scientists, and managers is of crucial importance for guaranteeing sustainable blue growth. The Summer School is an excellent opportunity for knowledge transferring amongst CEI countries, particularly those which are not EU Members”, said Csernovitz.
The School programme is in line with the objectives of the EU’s Blue Growth strategy to support sustainable growth in Europe’s marine and maritime sectors. It is and strongly related to the forthcoming realisation of the EU Strategy for the Adriatic Ionian Macroregion. The 5-day programme of the School tackles a variety of topics, including discussions with experts on climate change, geo-hazards, oil pollution, the prospects of marine biotechnology, as well as sessions dedicated to proposals for cooperation by the participants.
